Chemical Advice

Initial Fill

  • During the initial fill, carry out a dip test to give you a baseline for the water. Take a photo for reference.
  • Once full, begin warming the water.
  • APS – Alkalinity, pH and Sanitiser (Bromine / Chlorine). This is the advised method for initial commissioning of your water. It’s advised to mix your chemicals in a jug of warm water before adding to the tub to speed up the absorption into the water. 1 Teaspoon approx weight 7g.
  • Alkalinity – Get this balanced first. If your levels are too high, you need pH minus to reduce this. 2 teaspoons (14g) will reduce your Alkalinity level by between 10-20ppm so don’t worry if you need quite a bit. If you need to increase Alkalinity you need TA plus. 4 teaspoons (28g) will increase your level by approx 10ppm. Leave 2 hrs with tub on and retest. Adjust more if required.
  • pH. To increase or decrease, its a matter of using pH minus or pH plus. If you need to increase pH you need 1 teaspoon of pH Plus which will increase pH level by around 0.2 pH points. If you need to decrease pH then again 2 teaspoons to decrease by 0.2pH points.
  • You will need to test between dosing to ensure you don’t over shoot. Don’t worry it takes practice but it’ll get easier over time.
  • Sanitiser / Shock. This is to get the Sanitiser level initial up but also ensures any bacteria either in the tub or water is killed immediately. For 1000ltr tub, add 4 teaspoons of Bromine or Chlorine granules into a jug of warm water. Mix into the tub and leave for 24hrs with the lid on and filter/heater running.
  • Once you’ve carried out the initial dosing, do another dip test and ensure Sanitiser level is OK. If not, use some granules (Bromine or Chlorine) to increase the level. But shouldn’t need more than a teaspoon. If you over Sanitise the water, after your first dip, the levels will naturally lower during use.
  • Do not chase your levels, as long as your there or there abouts, that the most important thing.

Normal Operation

  • Whether you use tablets, granules or both to keep the Sanitiser levels balanced, ensure you do regular tests (daily is advised if using regularly).
  • If using tablets, these are designed to be slow release. 3 tablets in a dispenser will last around 4 days. I’d advise to use granules too and add a teaspoon after a long soak or heavy use.
  • Filters – after each use, remove the filter and give a quick hose down. Every 3 or 4 uses, rotate a spare filter into the tub. Once every 2 weeks or so I’ll using regularly, use a Filter Cleaner to help deep clean the filters and it removes biofilm build up too.
  • Shocking – I’d recommend using a Non Chlorine Shock once a week if you use the tub alot or once a fortnight. This will help boost the efficiency of the Sanitiser and helps boost the total Chlorine levels.
  • Your tub pH and Alkalinity levels should stay fairly stable, but if you need to adjust refer back to the top for dosing.
